"It's huge!" "It yummy!" roared the students with excitment as they saw a large tempting black forest cake being placed in the Audio Visual room during the lunch hour on Monday, the 15th of November. The PYP assembly began at around 1:15 pm. Two of Grade five students, Neil and Ratna, presented to the PYP students the significance of 'Children's day'. They spoke about the life and experiences of our first honorable Prime Minister, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, on whose birthday we celebrate 'Children's day' in India.
The presentation was followed by the Grade one students showcasing their understanding of their unit of inquiry on the human senses.
Then came the moment which they were all waiting for! Mr. Kapil(PYP coordinator) invited Mr. Chalasani (Principal) to cut the cake. Mr. Chalasani asked all the students to nominate representatives from their grades who would accompany him. The humongous cake was then sliced and distributed to the entire PYP. It was truly delicious!
In math, we did a very interesting activity: The children were divided in four groups (mixed levels). There were activities kept in a jar. These were related to measurements. The teams were asked to pick a activity from the jar and the measurements were noted down by a captain. The team which did the maximum activties won a prize.
We also did interconversion of units today. We have begun with interconverting the metric units of length. They were introduced to the "Prefix ladder": kilo, hecto, deca, meter, deci, centi and milli. They were given an easy way remember this: King Henry Died Mother Didn't Cry Much. We solved some examples on the board.
The students spent some time in completing their portfolios today. They chose their best pieces of work from all their folders and filed them in the portfolio.
Here is some extension for unit conversions in measurement. This is for extra practice. I will be uploading some extra work online for extension on a regular basis now. If you are unable to take a print, you can solve the problems in your math notebook. You can also sove it using MS word and email the answer sheet to me. Let me know what you think about this way of giving some extra practice.. is it convenient for everyone?

I am in deed fortunate to be teaching the very intellectual as well as affectionate students of Grade 5! In spite of being a big number, we never miss out on either academics or fun! The academic level of the batch is high and it has been incredible to teach and learn complicated concepts and bring in academic rigour: from converting binary numbers to operating with integers and from writing lab reports to inquiring into the periodic table! It's been a spectacular journey so far and I am sure it will only enhance further in the near future..
On this Children's day, I wish each and every aspiring 'EAGLE' of this wonderful class the greatest success and everlasting happiness! Always remember to focus on your goals just like the eagle and keep up the attitude of never giving up!

We watched the video on the rebirth of the eagle in the morning. Some students got an opportunity to reflect on their weekend.
The students got back into their inquiry groups today. They went to the IT lab and conducted research. The groups are based on different materials (cotton, sugar, metals, etc.). The students also began preparing charts based on their research. They will present this information to the class. They will all learn about the physical and chemical propertioes, chemical compositions, formulae and variations (different types) of all these materials.
We then had the Assembly by Grade one and Children's day celebrations. Grade five students also spoke about the importance of the day.
The students were overwhelmed to meet Mr. Ram Charan Teja (a famous Telugu actor) when he came to our classroom at around 2:30 pm. At his arrival, the students delightfully rushed to grab an autograph of the 'star'! They asked questions about his new movie 'Orange' and told him that his movies 'rock'! Mr. Teja humbly autographed their diaries, notebooks and whatever writable substance the students found instantaneously. What struck me with amazement was that the Grade fives enthusiastically requested him to view this Blog!! The address was then given to him. If you are reading this Mr. Teja, Thanks a lot for visiting the kids. It was in deed a splendid experience!!
